Fitzpatrick Makes
Breakthrough
- Reaches New Carreer High
Anna
Fitzpatrick made a significant
breakthrough this week by
qualifying for her first $75,000
challenger tournament in
Midland, Michegan, and reaching
the second round.
The Sheffield-born
18-year-old won three
matches to reach the main
draw, and then shocked the
higher ranked Viktoria
Kutusova 6-3, 6-3 in the
first round.
She ultimately went down
6-2, 6-2 in the second round
to the experienced German
Sandra Kloesel. The
28-year-old Kloesel has
spent much of her career
inside the world's Top 100.
The run will give
Fitzpatrick valuable ranking
points and confidence as she
continues her transition
from the junior to the
senior ranks.
Monte Carlo Tennis Academy
Fitness Trainer Jez Green
was courtside throughout the
event, and said: "Kloesel
was strong and confident and
didn't let Anna get the
first hit in, so Anna had to
force too much. This was a
good week but Anna now needs
to practise and play with
this level of opponent for
the next year so that she is
comfortable with the pace of
ball that they hit. Then she
will be able to compete with
them and eventually take
them out."
Following this tournaments'
results Anna Fitzpatrick is
now enjoying a new career
high ranking, 325 in the
world. She will now spend a
week training before her
next tournament, which is a
25k in Clearwater, Florida.
