Moodie Vanquishes Murray/Mirnyi
The Monte Carlo Tennis Academy’s
Wesley Moodie has begun 2008 in
style by reaching the doubles
semifinals at the Qatar Open in
Doha, Qatar.
The South African teamed up with
partner Jeff Coetzee to see off the
newly-formed and much-hyped
partnership of Max Mirnyi and Jamie
Murray 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday.
It was an impressive victory for
Moodie and Coetzee against opponents
who had both won Grand Slam mixed
doubles titles in 2007.
“We broke Mirnyi mid-way through the
first set and held comfortably
throughout,” said Moodie afterwards.
“We played well on our service games
and picked up our return games at
the right times.”
The win put Moodie and Coetzee into
a semifinal clash with Simon Aspelin
and Thomas Johansson. The Swedish
pair saw off top seeds Daniel Nestor
and Nenad Zimonjic in the
quarterfinals.
In the first round, Moodie and
Coetzee defeated Nicolas Kiefer and
Dmitry Tursunov. Moodie won through
two rounds of singles qualifying,
but lost out to Christophe Rochus in
the final round.
