Kontinen Receives Trial Extension
Finnish
junior Henri Kontinen has received
an extension to his trial-period
with the Monte Carlo Tennis Academy
(MCTA) after impressing in an
initial six-week spell.
The 16-year-old is currently ranked
at a career-high No.227 in the ITF
junior rankings, and did enough to
persuade MCTA Director of Coaching,
David Sammel to continue the trial
until the end of September, with a
view to making Kontinen a full-time
member of the Academy.
"Henri has made good progress and is
definitely a player in who we are
very interested,” said Sammel.
“He has certain physical targets to
achieve before the end of September
where we will be in a better
position to evaluate his potential.
We will continue to
help him with his programme and
invite him to certain tournaments to
give him every chance of succeeding.
He has won some good matches and
shown many
qualities. Tennis is a tough sport
and many boxes need to be ticked."
If Kontinen is accepted as a
full-time MCTA member after the new
trial period has concluded, he will
join junior members Ilija Vucic and
Anna Fitzpatrick, and senior member,
Ana Veselinovic.
The MCTA is the world’s first
touring academy. Its mission is to
discover, train and manage the most
promising young tennis players in
the world and to develop them to
become top 100 professional tennis
players.
