Fitzpatrick, Veselinovic Progress in Canada, Vucic in Tough Loss

Anna Fitzpatrick and Ana Veselinovic both continued their smooth progress at the $10,000 ITF tournament in Calgary, Canada on Wednesday as the Monte-Carlo Tennis Academy stars moved through to the quarterfinals.

Veselinovic, seeded No. 2 in the hard court event, recorded an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Dominika Dieskova of the Slovak Republic, while Fitzpatrick, the No. 3 seed, dropped just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Canadian wild card Stephanie Roy.

“Ana watched the ball and was really sharp with the feet from start to finish,” said coach Antony Hampson. “It was a really solid performance, and nice to put this one away.”

Veselinovic and Fitzpatrick are now just one win away from setting up a semifinal showdown in Calgary.

Meanwhile, Ilija Vucic went down in a tough three-set match in the third round of the European Junior Championships in Austria. The 16-year-old from Serbia suffered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 defeat at the hands of No. 16 seed Ilija Martinoski on the red clay.
