Vucic Cruises Past Karusevich

Ilija Vucic moved through to the third round of the Open International Juniors de Beaulieu sur Mer in France after an impressive straight sets victory over seventh seeded Russian Vladimir Karusevich on Tuesday.

Ilija, who defeated French wild card Romain Sichez in the first round, continued his exceptional form with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Karusevich, the Russian ranked 92 places above Ilija at No. 43 in the world.

“I played good today and I’m really happy I won this match,” said Ilija. “I was really tough on the court, I was giving it my best and I improved with the result.”

The win will go down as one of the best of Ilija’s young career so far with Karusevich having won back-to-back titles earlier this year at the Slovak Junior Indoors and the Czech Junior International, embarking on a winning streak of 11 matches to reach a career-high No. 23.

However, he was no match for Ilija, who took the opening set with two breaks of serve before coming back from 4-2 down in the second to reel off four consecutive games and book his place in the third round.

He will now meet either No. 10 seed Frederic de Fays of Belgium for a place in the quarterfinals.
