Fitzpatrick Powers Into
Nottingham Semis
Anna
Fitzpatrick moved through to the
semifinals of the $10,000 ITF
tournament in Nottingham on Friday
after an impressive straight sets
victory over American qualifier
Brittany Augustine.
The 18-year-old from Sheffield, who
lost to Augustine last October in
South Carolina, booked her place in
the semifinals at the Nottingham
Tennis Centre with a 6-4, 6-2 win to
set up a meeting with fellow Brit
Anna Smith.
"I was pleased with my performance
today," said Anna, who is seeded No.
4 in Nottingham. "I showed how much
I have improved both mentally and in
my game since losing to her in
America near the end of last year. I
could have easily let the first set
slip away in a match like this as I
have done in the past but I kept
focus and made the extra ball
whenever I could."
Anna began the match in confident
fashion and had opportunities at 2-1
in the first set to establish an
early lead against her 16-year-old
opponent. Despite the setback, Anna
held her nerve to take the opener
and continued her form in the
second.
"Once I was ahead and established
control, it was a pretty comfortable
match," added Anna. "I played some
good tennis to go up 5-1 and she had
to fight very hard for that game to
make it 5-2. She didn't want to
fight that hard for long, so I won
my service game to love, making four
out of four first serves."
Anna will now be looking to maintain
her momentum in the semifinals
against Smith, whom Anna defeated in
the final in Ilkley on grass in
August 2006 to capture her first
professional title.
