Vucic Earns ATP Ranking On Pro
Debut
Monte-Carlo
Tennis Academy teenager Ilija Vucic
has earned his first ATP singles
ranking points at his first attempt
after reaching the second round of
the Subotica Futures event in Serbia
on his professional debut.
The 16-year-old Serb, who reached
the semifinals in Novi Sad on his
professional doubles last week,
defeated Nemanja Kontic 4-6, 6-1,
6-2 on Tuesday.
“Ilija has again shown his pedigree
in tennis by achieving both a
singles and doubles ATP ranking at
his first attempt,” said MCTA
Director of Coaching David Sammel.
“It is rare for this to occur. For a
16-year-old not to be overawed by
the prospect of taking his chances
at the first opportunity is an
indication of a strong mentality. We
are very pleased and it also opens
the door to far greater flexibility
in his schedule for the rest of this
year and next.”
Ilija, who receives one ATP ranking
point for reaching the second round
following his victory over Kontic,
will now meet either third seeded
Darko Madjarovski or Vladimir
Pavicevic for a place in the
quarterfinals.
“I played really bad in the
beginning against Kontic,” said
Ilija. “I was missing a lot and
couldn’t find my forehand. But after
the first set, I settled down, I
found a couple of big shots and I
went through to the second round.”
Ilija will return to junior action
next week as the World No. 96
competes in the Canadian Open Junior
Championships in Quebec before
turning his attention to the US Open
Junior Championships in New York.
