After qualifying for the main draw,
Ilija Vucic went down in straight
sets in the first round of the
Australian Open junior event to the
World No.7, Greg Jones.
Ilija,
who needed to go the distance to win
through qualifying, was drawn to
play against the Australian No.1,
who had played in the qualifying
draw of the senior event a week
earlier.
Although Ilija had his chances,
including break points on the Jones
serve early on in the first set, he
lost 6-2, 6-3.
Monte Carlo Tennis Academy (MCTA)
coach Antony Hampson said it was all
part of the learning process that
Ilija needs to go through in order
to become the best player that he
can be.
“Despite the score, it was a
competitive match throughout. It
showed Ilija that he still needs to
work on his game to get to the level
he wants to reach, but Jones had a
huge serve, he only lost 13-11 in
the third set of the men’s
qualifying last week, and so it was
a pretty tough draw.”
Ilija will now turn his attentions
to the doubles, where he and partner
Aljaz Bedene will take on American
pair Mateusz Kecki and Austin
Krajicek in the first round.
