Fitzpatrick Falls Just Short in
Title Bid
Anna Fitzpatrick’s title bid at the
$10,000 tournament in Sunderland
came to end in the final after she
suffered a straight sets defeat at
the hands of top seed Gaelle Widmer.
Anna, who defeated fellow MCTA star
Ana Veselinovic in the quarterfinals
and followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win
over No. 2 seed Aurelie Vedy of
France in the semis, could not take
advantage of her break points in the
first set and eventually went down
6-4, 6-1 against the Swiss.
“I made a lot of errors early on in
rallies, but given that I still only
lost the first set 6-4, it means
that the other aspects of my game
around the errors were pretty good,”
said Anna. “I felt like I was
commanding quite a lot of points
especially in the first set, and I
think my first serve paid a big part
in keeping me in the set.”
Anna,
seeded No. 7 in Sunderland, was
looking to claim her second
professional title having won her
first in Ilkley last year, but the
17-year-old was powerless to stop
the Swiss who was ranked nearly 400
places above Anna at No. 257.
“Anna’s serve kept her in the final
and had been very good all week,”
said coach Antony Hampson. “Now it’s
time to build her performances this
week.”
Anna’s results in Sunderland means
she began the week at No. 650 in the
Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings,
just seven places below her
career-high of No. 643.
She soon put the disappointment of
losing in the final behind her and
kept her run of form with a 6-3, 6-2
win over Olgar Brozda of Poland in
the first round of the $10,000 in
Greece.
“We arrived late and couldn't
practice the day before my match,”
said Anna. “I’ve also been playing
on indoor hard courts and today it
was outdoors and pretty windy. It
was hard to implement my game plan
but I won which, in the tough
conditions today, was the most
important thing.”
