Fitzpatrick Falls Short in Wimbledon Qualifying Bid

Anna Fitzpatrick’s hopes of earning a place in the main draw of the ladies singles at Wimbledon were ended in the second round of the qualifying competition at Roehampton, where she was beaten 6-1, 6-2 by No. 8 seed Mathilde Johansson of France.

Anna, who won two matches to earn a wild card into the qualifying at the Bank of England Centre and then defeated Junri Namigata in the first round, found the World No. 116 Johansson too strong on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old from Sheffield will now turn her attention to the Junior Championships, which begin at The All England Club next week.

Her fortunes on the grass court season can be followed in her exclusive four-part diary on the BBC web site at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/6763973.stm
