Moodie Wins Qualifying Marathon
Former Wimbledon doubles champion
Wesley Moodie is through to the
second round of the singles
qualifying competition after a
marathon three-set victory over
Rohan Bopanna at Roehampton on
Tuesday.
Moodie, the World No. 137 who
recently joined the Monte-Carlo
Tennis Academy, came through 3-6,
6-1, 19-17 in just under three hours
against Bopanna, setting up a second
round meeting with Germany’s Simon
Stadler.
“I feel like I’m starting to play my
best tennis” said the 28-year-old
South African. “He was serving a
high percentage of first serves.”
Moodie made history at the All
England Club two years ago when he
teamed up with Australian Stephen
Huss to become the first qualifiers
to go on and win the Wimbledon
doubles title, defeating Bob and
Mike Bryan in the final.
Later that year he captured his
first, and so far only, ATP singles
title in Tokyo, saving match points
against Mario Ancic.
Moodie is looking to make his fifth
appearance at the All England Club,
having reached the third round in
singles in 2003.
