Fitzpatrick starts well at
Wimbledon
MCTA
player Anna Fitzpatrick scored the
biggest win of her career as she
swept past Junri Namigata of Japan
7-5, 6-0 in the first round of
Wimbledon qualifying at Roehampton.
Fitzpatrick, 18, and playing in the
senior qualifying competition for
the first time, was up against an
opponent seven years her senior and
ranked 288 places above her.
After a tough first set, Fitzpatrick
sped away to victory, and will now
face either eighth seed Mathilde
Johansson of France, or American
Julie Ditty.
“I’m happy with my performance,
especially the higher percentage of
returns I made after going break
down in the first set,” said
Fitzpatrick.
“The second set was better as I was
more aggressively looking to go
forward. I’m pleased to win
convincingly in my first match but
now I must move forward to the next
match and not be content.”
Fitness trainer Jez Green watched
from the sidelines, and added:
“This was an accomplished
performance today by Anna, and after
going a break down in the first set
she raised her level and executed
her game plan very aggressively and
effectively.”
Part of the Monte Carlo Tennis
Academy, Fitzpatrick is writing a
column for the
BBC Sport website that
documents her Wimbledon experience.
She won through two matches in the
LTA play-offs to earn her wild card
into the qualifying competition, and
would need to win two further
matches to reach the main draw.
