Vucic, Kontinen Qualify in Texas

Ilija Vucic has qualified for his first Futures event on American soil after a three-set victory over Joe Epkey in the final qualifying round at the $15,000 tournament in Mansfield, Texas on Monday.

The 16-year-old Monte-Carlo Academy star, who made his first appearance in a Futures event in his native Serbia in August, came through 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 against the American Epkey to seal his place in the main draw.

“I was putting a message on the court from the first point,” said Ilija, who defeated Nathan Robinson and Alexandru Pasareanu earlier in qualifying. “I was working my feet really hard and I was coming forward a lot after big forehands.”

Coach Antony Hampson added: “It’s a good result for Ilija to qualify for his first Futures event in the States. When the ball was in play, he was much the better player and he was moving up to the ball well.”

Vucic will be joined in the draw by MCTA trialist Henri Kontinen, who followed up his opening round victories over Rodrigo Morgado and Dmitry Novikov with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Carlos Moreiras.
