Fitzpatrick Wins All-MCTA Clash with
Veselinovic
In a clash between the Monte Carlo
Tennis Academy’s two female stars,
it was Anna Fitzpatrick who reached
the semifinals of the Sunderland
$10,000 after defeating good friend
Ana Veselinovic in a tight three-set
quarterfinal on Friday.
Meeting for the first time in
competition since Ana became a
full-time member of the MCTA last
month, Anna came recovered from the
loss of the first set to win 6-7(5),
6-4, 6-2 and avenge her loss to Ana
in Sunderland in January.
“I was pleased with Anna’s resolve
in the first set and the way she
changed the trend of match by
stepping up the court rather than
being controlled,” said Director of
Coaching David Sammel. “For Ana, it
was going fine until midway through
the second set. She created the myth
in her head that her forehand wasn’t
going well and subsequently lost her
competitiveness. As a result, the
third set was quite one-sided.”
It was the first time two MCTA
players had met in competition since
Ilija Vucic defeated Oscar Podlewski
in the Jerry Simmons Evert America
tournament last November.
Anna, seeded No. 7, will now meet
second seed Aurelie Vedy of France
for a place in the final. Their only
previous encounter also took place
in Sunderland two years ago, with
the French woman winning in straight
sets.
Meanwhile, Ilija’s run in the Banana
Bowl in Brazil came to an end in the
third round when he went down 6-1,
4-6, 6-2 against Bulgarian Dimitrov
Grigor. Ilija remains in Brazil,
where his five-week tour of South
America concludes next week at Copa
Gerdau.
