Academy Players Make Bright Starts
It has been a promising start to the
week’s tournaments for three of the
Monte Carlo Tennis Academy’s players
as Ilija Vucic, Anna Fitzpatrick and
Ana Veselinovic all won their
opening matches.
Anna and Ana both advanced to the
second round of the $10,000
tournament in Sunderland, while
Ilija continued his impressive run
on the clay in South America by
reaching the third round of the
Banana Bowl in Brazil.
Anna, the No. 7 seed in Sunderland,
came through a tough three-set match
against Germany’s Natalie Fehse,
while Ana, seeded No. 4, had a more
straight forward 6-2, 6-1 victory
over Britain’s Julia Bone.
“I was very pleased to get the win
after having some first round losses
recently,” said Anna. “At the start
of the third set, my game plan was
very clear, I knew what I had to do
and I think this helped me to stay
positive mentally.”
Anna will now meet fellow Briton
Melissa Gibb for a place in the
quarterfinals, while Ana takes on Laura
Haberkorn, the German who did not
drop a game against Britain’s Lucy
Warburton in the first round.
Meanwhile, on the junior circuit in
South America, Ilija upset No. 7
seed Roy Rupesh of India 6-1, 6-3 in
the first round and followed up with
a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Jan
Blecha, the Czech who won the Sey
Development Cup in February and who
is ranked 57 places above Ilija at
No. 98.
He now faces either Bulgaria’s
Grigor Dumitrev or Roberto Maytin of
Venezuela for a place in the
quarterfinals.
