Vucic Makes Run in Kentucky

MCTA Player Ilija VucicIlija Vucic reached the third round of the Kentucky International Junior Tennis Derby on Tuesday after a straight sets victory over No. 12 seed Brendan McKenzie of Australia.

Vucic, who defeated American Frank Carleton 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round, advanced to the last 16 with a 6-3, 6-2 win against World Junior No. 58 McKenzie.

"The conditions were pretty tough as it was windy," said the 16-year-old from Serbia. "I was serving pretty good. In the second set, I lost my intensity for a while but found some energy to win the match."

Coach Igor Tomasevic added: "Ilija played better [than in the first round]. He had good movement on the short balls."

Vucic, currently at No. 87 in the ITF Junior rankings, will eventually went down to No. 7 seed Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia for a place in the quarterfinals. The 18-year-old Bedene came into the tournament having reached the third round of the US Open Junior main draw in New York.

Earlier in the week, Henri Kontinen went down in three sets to Marin Draganja of Croatia in the first round.
