Moodie
Through to Quarterfinals in
Newport
Wesley
Moodie moved through to the
quarterfinals of the Campbell's
Hall of Fame Tennis
Championships in Newport after a
three-set victory over Croatian
Roko Karanusic on Wednesday.
Moodie, a former Wimbledon
doubles champion who joined the
Monte-Carlo Tennis Academy (MCTA)
in June, came through 6-4, 4-6,
6-2 in Rhode Island, the final
grass court tournament of the
season.
The 28-year-old South African
will now meet No. 2 seed Vince
Spadea in what will be his first
ATP quarterfinal since St.
Petersburg last October. He will
also be aiming to reach his
first ATP semifinal since he
captured the title in Tokyo in
2005.
Moodie, who is currently
ranked No. 137, reached the
semifinals in Newport two years
ago, losing to eventual champion
Greg Rusedski in straight sets.
This will be Moodie's first
meeting with Spadea, the World
No. 66 who lost to Rusedski in
that Newport final in 2005.
In the doubles, Moodie and
Frenchman Fabrice Santoro moved
through to the quarterfinals
with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over the
wild card pairing of Prakash
Amritraj and Aisam-Ul-Haq
Qureshi.
The top seeds will now meet
Nathan Healey and Igor Kunitsyn
for a place in the semifinals.
Last month,
Moodie announced he was joining
the MCTA to boost his chances of
reaching the World's Top 50, as
well as serving as an
inspiration to the Academy's
younger players, Ilija Vucic,
Anna Fitzpatrick and Ana
Veselinovic.
