Semifinal sadness for Anna
Anna
Fitzpatrick’s run in the Girls
juniors at Wimbledon finally came to
an end at the semifinal stage on
Saturday.
Fitzpatrick, who had won two singles
and one doubles match on Friday,
came out of the blocks slowly
against Poland's Urszula Radwanska
and went down 7-6, 6-3.
She fought back bravely from 3-0 and
two breaks of serve down in the
first set to lead 6-5, but couldn’t
quite push herself over the
finish-line in the first set.
Some of the 18-year-old Briton’s
volleying was a joy to behold, and a
half-volley drop shot winner at
15-40, 1-3 down was an example of
how different she is from the
majority of young, aspiring tennis
players in the world.
This is the last time Fitzpatrick,
who is affectionately nicknamed ‘Fat
Bloke’ and ‘Big Nuts’ by her three
brothers, will play in a junior
tournament.
She will now concentrate on
improving her senior ranking, but
will look back happily on her first
Wimbledon.
“Obviously I’m really disappointed
about losing today, but it’s been a
good tournament and I can take a lot
of confidence from it,” she said.
“I knew my game style could hurt the
best juniors in the world. I am now
looking forward to taking it back to
the senior tour.”
