Fitzpatrick Makes Challenger Breakthrough

Anna Fitzpatrick reached a new milestone this week by qualifying for her first Challenger event at the $25,000 Antalya tournament in Attaleia, Turkey.

Anna, seeded three in the qualifying competition, dropped just four games throughout her two matches en route to the main draw, which begins on Monday. After receiving a bye in the first round, Anna cruised past Vladlena Petushkova of Russia 6-0, 6-1 and then overcame India’s Sonal Phadke 6-2, 6-1 in the final qualifying round.

Looking ahead to the main draw, Anna was delighted to have progressed through the qualifying so smoothly. “This is the first time I have qualified for a $25,000 tournament and it was comfortable,” said Anna. “I'm going into the main draw feeling good and confident that I can do some damage. Today, I was happy with the style of tennis I played, I was waiting for opportunities to come forward and I closed the net very well. I need to play every match with that commitment at the net.”

MCTA Director of Coaching, David Sammel added: “Anna qualified for her first Challenger in style. Hopefully this will be the start of her being comfortable at this level. The Monte-Carlo training camp [last week] helped, her unforced error count was way down.”

In the main draw, Anna will join the Monte Carlo Tennis Academy’s Serbian star Ana Veselinovic and trialist Ana Timotic.
