Fitzpatrick Topples Fourth Seed
at Wimbledon
Anna
Fitzpatrick caused the biggest upset
of the Wimbledon junior event so far
when she smashed past fourth seed
Ksenia Milevskaya 6-4, 6-4 to reach
the last 16.
The 18-year-old from Sheffield
waited patiently through multiple
rain-breaks before finally taking to
Court 3 at 8.30pm on Wednesday.
Fitzpatrick, a member of the Monte
Carlo Tennis Academy, won the first
set 6-4, and it was a surprise that
the umpire allowed the match to
continue in near-darkness.
It gave Milevskaya enough time to
break for 2-0 in the second set
before the match was suspended
overnight.
That didn't stop Fitzpatrick, who
returned to the court, this time
Court 17, to break back on Thursday
morning and seal the second set 6-4.
Nicknamed 'Fat Bloke' by her
brothers because of her slender
physique, Fitzpatrick showed that
her game is well-suited to grass,
attacking the net and volleying well
whenever opportunities arose.
She now faces 13th seed Ksenia
Lykina or Kurumi Nara of Japan for a
place in the quarterfinals.
"It was a very good performance
against a girl ranked No.4 in the
world in the juniors," said MCTA
Head Coach David Sammel.
"Anna is maturing into the player we
all envisioned and given time she
will be a top 100 pro. Sport is
unpredictable but we are cautiously
optimistic that she can continue her
run this week."
The Monte Carlo Tennis Academy is
the world's first Touring Academy.
Based at the Monte Carlo Country
Club, its mission is to discover,
train and manage the most promising
young tennis players in the world
and to develop them into Top 100
professional tennis players.
