Academy Stars Suffer Tough Losses

Anna Fitzpatrick’s three-week tour of Canada came to an end in the second round of the $50,000 ITF tournament in Vancouver as she went down in straight sets to in-form Stephanie Dubois.

Despite playing well, Fitzpatrick suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat against the No. 2 seeded Dubois, the World No. 121 who has now won 12 consecutive matches in a run that has brought back-to-back titles in Hamilton and Kentucky in the last three weeks.

“I’m disappointed that the score was so one-sided because I know that I put my game on the court,” said Fitzpatrick. “It was only unforced errors when I was attacking that lost me the match. Had I made a few more balls, it could have been a lot closer score wise.

“I prepared very well and mentally it was a pretty good match. I kept at my game plan throughout. I just need to do that in every single match I play now. Today is like a benchmark in terms of preparation mentally as well as physically, and how to approach the first 10 minutes of every match.”

Despite the loss, it has been a successful tour of Canada for Fitzpatrick and fellow Monte-Carlo Tennis Academy star Ana Veselinovic. Last week in Calgary, Veselinovic claimed the singles title and teamed up with Fitzpatrick to win the doubles as both players moved to career-high rankings – Veselinovic at No. 364 and Fitzpatrick at No. 387.

Both players will now begin preparations for two tournaments in Moscow, which begin on August 20 in Russia.

Meanwhile at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, South African Wesley Moodie went down 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the second round against No. 12 seed Vincent Spadea.

The World No. 107 now turns his attention to the doubles, where he and Australian partner Todd Perry face top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan in the quarterfinals.

Moodie’s next singles tournament will be at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters which begins in Cincinnati on August 13.
