Anna Into Round Two

Anna Fitzpatrick beat the rain and a stubborn opponent to reach round two of the Girls Singles at Wimbledon.

The 18-year-old from Sheffield overcame Melanie Oudin of the United States 7-5, 6-4.

Fitzpatrick started well, breaking for 2-love and creating chances for a double-break, but Oudin hit back to level.

The players were called off for rain at 4-4. When they returned, Fitzpatrick struck to take the set 7-5.

The second set seemed set to pass in a flash as the MCTA player moved 5-1 ahead, but Oudin again responded, breaking back for 5-4.

Fitzpatrick required three match points to seal victory, but after finally earning her place in round two, Director of Coaching David Sammel was a happy man.

"Anna is maturing into the player we all envisioned and given time will be a top 100 pro. Sport is unpredictable but we are cautiously optimistic that she can have a run this week."

Her credentials will be heavily tested in round two when she takes on fourth seed K. Milevskaya of Belarus.
