Moodie Makes Washington Progress

South African Wesley Moodie moved through to the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Ryan Sweeting.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Monte-Carlo Tennis Academy in June, will now face No. 12 seed Vincent Spadea in the $600,000 ATP tour event.

“I’m relatively pleased with the way I played,” said the 2005 Wimbledon doubles champion. “There was a lot of big serving in the match. I took advantage of some second serves to get the break in the middle of the first set. He was really on a roll on his serve until I stepped back two metres on his serve at 4-4 in the second and played a good game to break.”

Moodie, who joined the Academy with the aim of breaking into the world’s Top 50, has been delighted with his progress so far. “A few things that I’ve been working on with Dave [Sammel] and Jez [Green] have definitely started becoming more natural and obviously helped with the end result,” said Moodie. “There’s still some work to be done though.”

Moodie is also through to the second round of the doubles with Australian partner Todd Perry. After their first round win over Jamie Murray and Eric Butorac, Moodie and Perry face a potential meeting with top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan should the Americans overcome Paul Goldstein and Trip Phillips.
