Advances In Vancouver
Anna
Fitzpatrick claimed her first
victory in a $50,000 ITF tournament
with a hard-fought three-set win
over Russian Maya Gaverova in
Vancouver on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old
from Sheffield lived up to the “Big
Nuts” nickname her brother gave her
during her BBC Wimbledon diaries
last month as she came through
7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(4) to reach the
second round.
“Anna never
really found her form but she dug up
some great balls at the end of the
third set to scrape over the line,”
said coach Antony Hampson.
Fitzpatrick, who
is currently ranked a career-high
No. 387 on the Sony Ericsson WTA
Tour, will now face either second
seed Stephanie Dubois of Canada or
Austria’s Anna Bartenstein for a
place in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Ana
Veselinovic failed to capitalise on
her recent double-winning form in
Calgary last week as she went down
in three sets against Sharon Fichman
in the first round.
Just three days
after defeating the Canadian 6-2,
6-1 in the final in Calgary, Fichman
gained her revenge with a 6-2, 3-6,
6-1 victory over the Serbian
teenager.
