Anna Fitzpatrick stormed to victory
in the Women’s $10,000 Singles event
at Ilkley, Yorkshire in straight
sets on Saturday, August 5th.
Defeating Anna Smith from Surrey, GB
6-4 6-3 Anna claimed her first
$10,000 title and with it
highlighted her future potential.
For both players it was a daunting
experience playing in their first
$10,000 event final and it showed as
the nerves kicked in and errors
followed. However, seventeen year
old Anna was the first to regain her
composure at 4-3 up in the first
set. Relaxing she was able to hit
more freely and her aggressive game
style began to reap rewards as she
took the first set 6-4.
In the second set Anna was quick to
continue where she had left off in
the first. Playing two solid games
the MCTA player went 2-1 up. Her
opponent was playing well from the
back of the court, mixing it up from
the baseline with a combination of
heavy slice followed by a flatter
ball; but this didn’t deter Anna who
was able to deal with the variety
effectively.
Despite Smith fighting to the end
Anna continued to take the
initiative and swept through the
second set 6-3.
Anna was delighted with her win, but
forever the perfectionist still felt
there was room for improvement:
“In this particular match I
should have serve and volleyed more
to win comfortably. I think the
lack of it was due to the occasion
and hopefully the next time I am in
a similar position I will have
learnt from today’s match and deal
with it better.”
